English -The Tunnel

In English we have been generating ideas based on images from A. Browne's book The Tunnel. We have used the images to come up with our own ideas  for a story. First we split into groups and wrote a class story, then we wrote our own. We are in the process of typing them up and making a class book of our own short stories.
Our collaborative story on display.

More Newton Manor Photos and videos

Our guide told us all about the famous apple tree. What type it was, how old it was and how part of the tree was being held up by support posts.Isaac lived in the house over looking the orchard.

Getting ready to launch our rockets.

discussing how to make them fly further

What happens if we change the angle of  the launcher ?

waiting in turn

Watch the videos of our rockets being launched.

Our rockets were very successful. We learnt how to improve the designs of some to make them fly
further e.g. by altering the shape of the nose cone.
We applied our knowledge of forces throughout the day and enjoyed a good trip to Woolsthorpe Manor..

Parachutes

In science today we made parachutes to test air resistance. How would the shape of the canopy affect the time taken to fall to the ground?

Woolsthorpe Manor Trip

As part of our topic learning about forces we visited Woolsthorpe Manor-birthplace of Isaac Newton. We had a look at the orchard and the tree that the apple was supposed to have fallen from, watched a film about the early life of Isaac, had a tour of the house and made rockets. We even had a new bus (with tables) for our journey home!
Gravity was discovered from this very tree.

A good trip.

Watch for more photos from the i pad. Hopefully a video of rockets being launched too!
