Science -electricity

In science we investigated how we could alter the brightness of a bulb. Some groups chose to alter the number of batteries added to their circuits, others altered the number of bulbs, some changed the thickness of wires and others investigated the length of wires.
One or two thought the bulbs would blow as they were getting so bright and were surprised when they did not.In fact the bulbs dimmed and this meant they had to reason why this had happened. Lots of good investigating and questioning .

adding more bulbs...

what will happen if?

does the bulb work?

working together

using a kit from home-proved very popular-easy to use to show the effect of wire lengths

will it blow?

adding batteries...

Vincent's kit.Look like he is pleased with the results.

A successful afternoon-now we know how the brightness of a bulb can be altered and what the different results are due to.

Maths in class 3

We have been learning about 2D and 3D shapes. At the start we did not know how many nets of cubes there were. We know know there are 11 and we know some top tips to help us recognise them.
We put our knowledge to the test using an interactive game, taking turns in groups of 11 we had to click on the correct nets out of a selection on the smart board. Each time we played the game the nets were in different places so we had to look carefully.

taking turns
looking carefully
remembering our top tips

all 11 found in 22 seconds!
Success!
Our next unit is measures and data handling so in readiness  for our work next week Y 6 measured the length of the copper coin trail we made during Children in Need day.
remembering to count!

will we get the same measurement?

collecting the coins in
our trail went all round the school

lots of coins-
Next week we will be estimating, measuring, weighing, converting, counting...real data, real money -using and applying our maths skills of measures and data handling.

English in class 3

Our Tunnel stories are all finished and on display -some fantastic ideas for all to read. Our display looks good -I hope you agree.

Our instruction writing took on a whole new level with our recipes-truly revolting recipes.Again they are on display as well as in a book of recipes.Well it was October 31st when we wrote them!

Our new unit is poetry. On 11.11.13 we wrote our own Acrostic style remembrance poems. They  are on display in the foyer and are soon to be added to the school blog as they are thought provoking and really capture the theme and feelings evoked by war.

We added some poppy poems to our wonderful writing about Bonfire night too. Please look when you are in school as we are proud of our work.

Dojo certificate winners

We have dojo points in class 3 ( as well as house points and raffle tickets) .
Using dojos was at the request of the children following a successful trial in the summer term.
Children can earn these for good work, being ready, good thinking, perseverance, special homework and many other things. Mrs Chadwick did the totals the dojos from last term and the top 10 places are awarded to...

the top 5 places were awarded to...

                                               The top 5 children.

Congratulation to all these children. Other rewards that the class voted for were: to choose their own dojo characters( for those who got above half the class average dojos), to get a  raffle ticket per 10 dojos, to have a cushion for a day and for the top 5, to come in non uniform for a day.
Everyone was rewarded by Mrs Chadwick with a  chocolate treat.

Maths

We have been investigating number sequences and patterns. We learned about the square and triangular number sequences, As well as looking at the numbers we explored different ways to represent these using a range of resources.

uni fix cubes and peg boards
cubes
elastic bands
square and triangular sequences using bands
peg boards
peg boards-  building up the sequences

adjusting and counting to check the sequences are correct

drawing using dotty paper
group work
sharing ideas
exploring together.
We found lots of patterns and made links between the 2 sequences. We were able to show and explain these to the rest of the class.
