Year 6 visited RAF Cranwell to experience a Cool Aeronautics event.
We were met with the news that there was a power cut so it was cold and the emergency lighting dim but that did not spoil our day.We were treated to a fabulous day with Flight Sergeant Bob Morton and Sergent Lee Adamson looking after us.
So what super heroes do you know? What special powers do they have?
Here is someone who is learning to use one of the super heroes powers-flight.
Phil told us how he was inspired as a young boy visiting an air show with his grandpa and how he knew he wanted to learn to fly.
Bob told us some true stories about real life heroes that were all associated with RAF Cranwell-Douglas Bader. We were mesmerised listening to the incredible things that Bader did- a true hero.
We learned about Frank Whittle and how he battled to actually join the RAF due to his height and how he went on to become a pilot and to invent the jet engine.Another hero.
We heard another true story about a pilot who saved his crew by putting out a fire outside the plane, falling, being captured by Germans and not telling anyone about his heroics
We met Squadron Leader Mark 'Disco' who was taking part in a Battle of Britain Memorial flight when he experienced an oil leak that covered his view from the cock pit. He talked about how he managed to land the plane. He told us to "Stay calm under pressure, Prepare and practise and to rely on friends " just as he did to enable him to land safely.
He showed us the video of his flight and we listened to the radio conversation between himself and another pilot.
Next we had a short session writing about what we'd learned or creating our own hero stories.
Kayley was happy to read hers out .
Next we were taught about what makes a plane fly with Bob and Lee demonstrating .
Now we knew what makes planes fly we each made our own.
Lee pointing out a rather topical joke relating to Donald Trump !
So? Will our planes fly? Whose will go the furthest?
Rueben was awarded his cap for his decoration on his plane- an oil leak over the cockpit- just like in the story we heard earlier.
Isabelle's plane flew the furthest beating everyone in our school and the school from Skegness too.
Now to learn about radios and how they work...
what do we know already? Quite a bit actually.
We were provided with kits and in pairs had to construct our own radio.
And we have music-what station?
hold the aerial higher and tune in to other stations
great success all round in the newly restored light and heat.
Ready for the return journey carrying 2 goody bags - 1 from the RA,1 from Cool Aeronautics.
Thank you everyone involved in our day -it was truly amazing. We had a fabulous time and hope to visit again soon.
