Certificate winners

The group that went to Belvoir Cricket club and were coached by Paul Nixon got their certificates for being described as "the best group of well behaved and focused children" he had worked with.Fabulous comment and therefore worthy of the certificates.

Super English work

super attitude

Super questions during our visit to Lincoln Cathedral

Author Visit- Rachel Hamilton

Rachel Hamilton came to talk about her book-The Case of the Exploding Toilet. She talked about the journey of a book-how she came to write her book. She brought along her story board and gave children chance to discuss and share their own ideas.
How a story starts-with an idea.

Where do the ideas come from?

what happens next?

#
lots of questions and answers

If you want to write---then write-a good message.

Acting out the first chapter-mum ( Conor) a policeman and questions to where has dad gone?
why are his smoking shoes left?

an exploding toilet, a wacky scientist and a little girl who’s too clever for her own good.

singing books at the end of the visit

28 children came back on Monday to buy the book and Rachel came on Friday to sign them all for us.

Rachel singing her book in the hall

1 year 6 has finished the book already and is looking forward to the sequel.
Some children in class 3 have been inspired to write and are writing their own story and plan to send it to Rachel for her comments.

Eiffel Tower Group Challenges

With some of class 3 missing at a music event, the rest of the class worked in mixed age groups as team leaders to complete a range of activities based around the Tour de France.
The first challenge was to tear from a sheet of newspaper the shape of the Eiffel Tower. Groups were provided with a photo before so they knew what the tower looked like! Sound easy? No-they had to do this in complete silence! Watching as parts of the tower were torn away and the paper got smaller and smaller!
watching carefully

                                                                   what to tear next?
mmm-how to make it look like the Eiffel Tower?

Can we use the bits torn away? that would help!

still got a big piece of paper

now for the finer details to be torn and made
Not Easy!
The children all looked at each others and voted with their feet-they stood around the winning Eiffel Tower.
3 groups ended up with shapes that looked like the actual structure-this one as it was out of 1 sheet of paper, other groups placed strips torn away to recreate the tower.

Next activity- to make a standing Eiffel Tower using art straws , sellotape and  paper clips. Winning one will be  the tallest free standing tower.
Planning first with Ben as team leader.
Fin with his  group adding their ideas.

Megan with her group discussing possible strategies.

Chloe and her group planning and testing ideas.

Georgie and her group planning their tactics

groups now have their jobs to do before tower is constructed

The tallest tower standing was 1m 68cm tall-well done .

Other groups were judged a success as they were over 1m tall, stood up and looked like the Eiffel Tower. These 2 groups were judged the best 2

Fin with his group and their tower-judged best for looking most like the Eiffel Tower.

Great team work from year 2, 3 4 5 and 6.
Our final activity( inspired by cycles/ bike wheels/Tour de France-the hoop going round the group in a circle) was to get the hoop over and round the group without breaking hands-quite a challenge.
Can it be done? Yes!

Group sitting down have done it-without breaking hands?
A good afternoon-prizes were awarded to all for super team work and effort.

Kensuke's Kingdom

Our class novel Kensuke's Kingdom is providing us with lots of different cross curricular  opportunities . As well as our daily  English lessons we have written and performed our own play scripts, completed homework Missing Persons posters, made a display of the island complete with palm tree, coconuts, orangutans, a sloth and shells.
our display-messages in bottles hanging amongst the sea -weed

                                                            Missing Person posters
Michael and Stella-Missing Posters

Children painting shells  in the style of Kensuke- images of blossom tress,Japanese characters, fish and sunsets.Shells are now part of the display-paper ones hanging and real shells at the base of the tree.

Starting to plan the board game.

Children designing and making board games based on kensuke's Kingdom. Characters are used for the counters, clues based on the story, forfeits-"move back 3 spaces - stung by jelly- fish, move forward 2 places - fresh coconuts found " are examples used .

Discussing next steps as a group.

Groups working hard and looking forward to sharing with their peers.
Freeze Frame of drama activity-group portraying the May Day radio call when Michael was first discovered to be missing overboard from the Peggy Sue.

Conscience Corridor( a drama activity)-Should Michael send a message in a bottle or not? The 2 rows gave conflicting views and at the end of the corridor, Michael ( Amelia) had to make her decision-not to send as it would betray Kensuke. The class then voted and it was 14 for Michael to send a message and 14 for him not to send a message! This perfectly shows the conflict that Michael was facing in the story.

Using ICT to create our own Comic Strip Kensuke Stories.

Groups playing the board games that were made earlier-very successful.

Some super clues and forfeits using scenes from the story as inspiration.

All games proved popular with the rest of the class.

Spread out in the corridor.

Any space free was used.

Super work .
