Dame Carol Ann Duffy at Lincoln University

Dame Carol Ann Duffy at Lincoln University

On Thursday we took all KS2 to the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre at Lincoln University to listen to Dame Carol Ann Duffy read her book The Princesses' Blankets. We were shown to our seats on the front 2 rows and waited patiently for 1 school to arrive...then the performance began. Dame Carol Ann was joined by her friend John Samson on stage.

Within seconds all children and staff were enraptured as Carol Ann read her book accompanied by John playing music on a range of instruments.
                                          Quaytickets
Carol Ann and her best friend John (who she says was a gift from the Queen when she was made Laureate…) read from her book as John wove around Carol Ann's words, even  playing two instruments at once...

conjuring a magical, musical wonderland. Mozart's wig  made an appearance during one of the poetry readings . We joined in shouting out loud – as everyone knows, the cleverest people are always the loudest( or so we were told through poetry).
Every time John played a certain recorder we knew we were once again returning to The Princesses' Blankets story.

Front row full of anticipation before the show begins...

We enjoyed listening to lots of poems, listening to the music, looking at the instruments

 and hearing The Princesses' Blankets.

A fantastic opportunity for all of us- I thanked the University for inviting us and asked them to include us in any future events which they promised to do

Volcano making and Superhero clay in art....

As part of our Geography topic learning about volcanoes , children are making a dough version that we will fill with Bicarb and vinegar to replicate a volcano erupting.

With hindsight it may have been better to do this after our PE festival- hence the rather floury Marston jackets! It did brush off well though!

Our volcano...

carefully sculpted ready for the next step when dry.
Elise produced a super piece of work about the earths core which is now on our volcano display.

Art...Superhero clay models...
As part of our Superhero focus in English, Mrs Ballaam is also focusing on superheroes..Children on Friday sculpted their own creations-not easy!
Tyler however soon found out that he was a master sculptor and readily completed his superhero...

some of the finished models.

The painted final models will look fabulous.

Y6 with Police Woman Barbara talking about Keeping Safe

Police Woman Barbara met with year 6 as part of a project called Bright Eyes- all about how to keep safe.
Only 5 as 2 year 6 were absent.

I left the camera with year 6 to take photos...

Tyler received the first of 2specially knitted teddies

All enjoyed trying on the Hi Vis jacket

Darcy also was given a teddy- the teddies were awarded for good questions, answers and behaviour.

This is what happens when you leave year 6 in charge of the camera....

Fun was had but a serious message was taken on board- how to keep themselves safe in the future.

Well done you two-even though Darcy wanted Tyler's teddy- don't think he will swap for a pink one!

Dojo Reward - Baking biscuits

Using  the Dojo totals from  last half term we worked out the class average and those who got equal to or more than this chose to do baking as their special reward.

The rest of the class  decorated ready bought biscuits as their reward for working hard last term- no one missed out- everyone either made or decorated biscuits.( more photos to follow)

Mrs Barnes and Mrs Millar worked with 13 children weighing the ingredients out, mixing...

Transition workshop with Walton Girls School

We welcomed  Walton students in year 7 and 8 together with Mrs Leonard (Vice Principal) and Miss Smith to our school on Wednesday. The purpose was a transition workshop to make children think about their next transition- from Y6-Y7, from Y5-6...
Mrs Leonard gave us her top tips for making the transition to secondary school straightforward. To do this we split into groups under the guidance of a Walton student to produce freeze - frame style images of things that children need to remember...
A pencil case full of the correct equipment, a lunch box or a purse with money, a PE bag...

Mrs Leonard talking to  us, explaining the purpose of the workshop

Starting to work in our groups

introducing ourselves

names and year groups- can we remember them?

What is in the pencil case?Ruler, pencil, rubber...

I like how this group made the actual pencil case too.

scissors?

Now what is in the lunch box?
A banana, yoghurt and spoon, drink with a straw and a packet of crisps!

How do you feel on your first day?
Lost? Looking for someone?

Which way? What now?

Now thinking about the differences between primary and secondary school.

What are you looking forward to?

What could worry you?

All working together.

Class 3 and the Walton students.

Thumbs up- a super workshop, thank you.
