Sport Relief Decathlon Challenge

As well as dressing up in sports gear, learning about what the donated money is used for, we wanted to set ourselves a sporting challenge.Could we as a whole class complete 10 separate 1 minute challenges in 30 minutes?
We decided the challenges, got the equipment ready- as we knew that we needed quick change overs so we did not loose time and went with our official adjudicators ( Mrs Cooney and Mrs Millar) to the hall.If more all the class were not completing all the time then we had failed the task and had to repeat it!
First challenge- a jog around the hall( would also act as our warm up).

Netballers, ice skaters, cricketers, climbers, gymnasts, rugby players, footballers, horse riders, tennis players, judo-all jogging
Next challenge-hooping
it did not matter if the hoop fell as long s it was started again quickly!

easy for some-a challenge for others!
3rd challenge:
skipping with our hoops

some really skipping well
 phew-it's tiring!

ladder relay
keeping moving, no stopping

throwing and catching in pairs-we failed our first attempt and had to redo it!(too many dropped and not good throwing according to our adjudicator)

individual skills

uni hoc dribbling round the hall

avoiding our class mates-not easy when 29 are concentrating on their skills-we did well.
The next 2 activities we completed outside-non stop netball goal shooting and then finally a running team relay.
10 events-our Sport Relief Challenge was met-success!

Science-dissolving

For part of our "More about Dissolving" Topic, we suggested ways to try to separate a mixture of flour and water Last week we found we could separate a solution of salt and water by evaporation. The same did not work for our flour and water mixture.
Pouring the water off and then spooning the flour out was a suggestion by Ben.We tried it-not very effective-but we did separate some of the mixture.

Next idea Andrew suggested we use a sieve. He  found the most suitable sieve and tried to separate the mixture-better than the first idea-some flour was left behind in the sieve but some went through as the water was still very cloudy.

Sophie suggested filtering .Georgie suggested using some material to act as a filter. We  found some filter papers in the science box tried it . We saw that the mixture dripped slowly through the filter so we left it over night.

tipping slowly so we did not go over the top of the filter paper

the clear jar showed us that the water was clear when it dripped through

The next morning the water was in the jar-clear without flour in it and the flour was left behind in the filter paper. Success- we predicted, tried and found the best way to separate our flour and water mixture.

Art-Mod Roc Statues

In art we have been looking at movement in art and this week we have started to make mini statues showing people in action. Some are dancers, others footballers, others may be swimmers. When the Mod-Roc has dried we will paint our models so that they look like bronze statues.
We did this on our Book Day-hence some of our strange costumes under our painting overalls, hats and make up!

Watch this space for our finished statues.

Dojo Winners

The totals for the first half of Spring Term were calculated and here are the winners who all got equal to or more than the class average of 29 dojos.
The rewards were decided by the children-cushions for days, raffle tickets, letters home and a non uniform day for the top 5 children.Well done to all these children.

RE-looking at artefacts

During our topic about Buddhism we looked at a range of artefacts. We discussed what they might be, who might use them, where we might find them and what answers to questions we wanted to find out.
We came up with some brilliant drawings and suggestions that showed a good empathy and deep thinking .
Listen to the sound this makes? Is it a call to pray?

Why are the fingers in this position on the Buddha?

Are the 4 carved rings significant? They are on the handle and on the main part ?

Why does this statue have jewels on it? Is it to signify Buddha before he gave up his riches?

Prayer beads-I'll just try them on.

Is the number of beads significant?

Why is his hair like that?

Maths

We are looking at how we calculate this week. We applied our knowledge of adding to a game. In pairs we rolled dice and moved around the board adding whatever number we landed on. Great fun-but we also used a range of ways to add-depending on the numbers we landed on.
The first game winner was the first one to reach 100, the second we could do was first to ,1000 and the third game was first to reach 10,000.We were very keen to check each others calculations so we knew no cheating was going on. A good maths lesson.
 just checking
pencil and paper for larger calculations

how close are you?

my turn?

any winners yet?

Chris Graves Inspire+ Visit

Last week Chris Graves from Inspire+ came to class 3 to talk about the importance of effort and working hard. He debated effort or talent-which was the most important. He talked about talent in sport and effort and related this to the importance of working hard.
Some valuable lessons and decisions were discussed and children were able to relate what he said to their school work as well as to their sport.
