Advent calendar in class 3

Our advent calendar this year is an interactive one with different tasks each day . (we do have a traditional chocolate one too!).These may be hangman, Pointless, word games or maths games. The product game proved a favourite and got rather competitive.
On Wednesday( also our Christmas Jumper day) 2 teams played against each other to try to get 4 in a row by multiplying numbers 1-9 by moving only 1 at a time to make the products on the board. Tactics came into play-teams had to think ahead and block as well as trying to get the answers.

Children edged ever closer to the board  trying to beat the other team.

The score was 1 game all and the second game seemed to have reached a stale mate .

Joseph could not help himself- under the table thinking how to win!

Checking times table grids for all possibilities.

Hands up with suggestions for team captains Rory and Jasper.

Just when I was about to call it a draw, Rory moved the slider to make the winning move...I had not seen it! I thought a draw was inevitable!

Cipher codes in Computing lessons.

This week in Computing, the codes looked at included caesar cipher codes and pi pen cipher codes.
Children enjoyed creating messages in code for their peers to decipher.

Pig pen cipher codes
The pigpen cipher  is a geometric simple substitution  which exchanges letters for symbols which are fragments of a grid.

In cryptography, a Caesar cipher, also known as Caesar's cipher, the shift cipher,Caesar's
code or Caesar shift, is one of the simplest and most widely known encryption techniques.

Some super work using codes, challenging and enjoyable.

Year 6 Leadership Conference day at Walton Girls School.

Year 6 went on a leadership conference at Walton Girls. This is a new venture with the purpose of improving transition to secondary school as well as giving year 6 opportunities to mix with other year 6's and improve their leadership skills.
Before the event they had to make a presentation about leadership opportunities in our school. All year 6 worked on this in school and then presented this to the other schools taking part in the conference
Attentive and focusing on instructions being given.
Waiting with the other schools.

Sticker badges so every one knows who is who.

Now back at school year 6 are continuing their task to create a transition booklet for year 6 pupils to use. They are starting this for their homework this week.
Mrs Millar was full of praise for how well the children worked and represented our school. She was very proud of them and said they were a pleasure to take for the day.

Computing- We are Cryptographers.

In our computing lessons we are learning about cryptography. We have made our own semaphore flags and passed messages to each other using them.
Using diagrams to help them, Alex and Jake gave a message to the class which they had to work out.

We also looked at using Morse code and Jacob and Tyler passed signals to the class using torches.

We linked this with out World war 2 topic and talked about the need for messages and codes during the war.

Children In Need Day

For Children in Need we paid £1 to come dressed out of school uniform. Some chose to come Pudsey style, others in non uniform.
Joseph baked a Pudsey and Blush Bear cake for us-thankyou Joseph.
