Evacuee Day Stibbington Visit

Monday 27th was our trip to Stibbington to experience life as an evacuee. We arrived at Nene Valley Railway Station to be met by Veronica who welcomed us on our arrival from London . She read the register and checked we were all here (we had new names and ages of real people who were evacuated to Stibbington in 1940).Adults too were given new names and we used these throughout the day- as Miss Smith ( Veronica) explained the first part of our day.

We were to walk to the village as country life was explained to us and houses where some of us would be staying were pointed out.

We called in the local church and a prayer was said for anyone who was fighting in the war.

2 lucky children were to be staying in these brand new modern houses- complete with inside toilets- number 13 for (Lloyd and Lucy).

We arrived at the centre...

hung up our coats...

and enjoyed a jam sandwich.

We sat in our family groups and filled in our identity cards.

We were given photos and information about the places we were to stay.

We had 2D and 2X1/2D to spend in the 1940's shop so first we had to decide what to buy.

Working out what we could buy with the 1940's coins.

Quiz time- using the posters and information around the room, we had 15 questions to answer learning more about WW2.

Lunch:jam, cheese and  spam sandwiches with an apple and spiced cake.
Time to play 1940's style.

The bell signalled the end of playtime and time to go to the school room.
Girls first on one side of the class, then boys on the other side.

Gas mask boxes on chairs ready then a prayer.

First exercise- gas mask drill.

Spellings- using nib and ink pens.

An air raid siren sounded so we had to make our way quickly to our shelter...

It was cold, dark and narrow but safe. Miss Smith did a register to check we had all made it safely.

We sang a song we had just learned-It's a Long Way To Tipperary, recited times tables and recalled rations in pounds and ounces.

After the all clear we returned to the class room.

A day packed full of information as well as activities for us to immerse our selves into the life an evacuee could expect. Miss Smith( Veronica) was a marvellous raconteur full of information, facts, and insights into life in Stibbington in 1940.
A great day was had by all children as well as the adults who came with us: Mr.Caton-Mr Straw, Miss George-Mrs.Millar, Miss Brown-Mrs Carley and Miss Edwards-Mrs.Middleditch. Everybody in full 1940's style clothing- a great effort class 3 .
